Awards and recognitions at the 2021 Day of FERI

Also this year, we received a large number of awards and recognitions at the Day of Faculty event.

  • The best graduate in 2020/2021 was our student Dragana Ostojić.
  • Recognitions for outstanding student contribution in 2021 were awarded to Vid Keršič, Mitja Žalik, Leon Abraham, Matic Rašl, Lina Zorman and Jakob Fras.
  • The plaque for excellent cooperation with FERI was awarded to Igea d.o.o.
  • Recognition for outstanding teaching was awarded to Sandi Majninger.

EXHIBITION BEAUTIFUL SPACES

On Tuesday, 18th May 2021, on the International Museum Day, a permanent exhibition entitled Beautiful Spaces was opened at the Maribor Regional Museum. FERI employees from the Laboratory for Geospatial Modeling, Multimedia and Artificial Intelligence also participated in the preparation of the exhibition.

BEST VOLUNTEER EMPLOYED IN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

Slovenian Philanthropy, the Association for the Promotion of Volunteering, on behalf of the Slovenian Network of Voluntary Organizations, highlights the competition in public administration employees who perform volunteer work in their free time and contribute to the promotion of volunteering among public administration employees. The recipient of the title of the BEST VOLUNTEER EMPLOYED IN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION for 2020 was our young researcher Matej Kramberger, who was appointed at the suggestion of the Municipality of Črna na Koroškem.

HORIZON 2020 PROJECT: DAPHNE

At FERI, within the Institute of Computer Science, successfully launched the acquired Horizon 2020 project, DAPHNE - Integrated Data Analysis Pipelines for Large-Scale Data Management, HPC, and Machine Learning.

In December 2020, under the auspices of the Horizon 2020 European funding program, the four-year international project DAPHNE, Integrated Data Analysis Pipelines for Large-Scale Data Management, HPC, and Machine Learning, was officially launched.
The project will include extreme-scale analytics, in the fields of natural sciences, computer and information sciences, such as quantitative analysis, machine learning in the topic of artificial intelligence and data analysis in the topic of data science. The project consists of 13 consortium partners (with UM FERI as one of the partners) and is coordinated by Know-Center GmbH (Austria).

STAMINA EU project

We are a proud consortium member of STAMINA project (https://stamina-project.eu/), which has started in September 2020. The goal of the project is to develop an intelligent decision support platform for pandemic prediction and management. Institute of Computer Science at UM FERI is working together with Community Healthcare Centre Dr. Adolf Drolc, Maribor on identifying gaps in Slovenian pandemic management and pandemic meta-data description.

Achievement in the ERK 2020 Student Contribution Competition

At the end of September, the 29th International Electrotechnical and Computer Science Conference ERK 2020 was held in Portorož, organized by the Slovenian Section of the IEEE. As part of the conference, a student contribution competition was held, in which student Vid Keršič achieved second place and student Domen Kavran third place. Both Vid and Domen are students of the Computer Science and Information Technologies study program at FERI. Domen developed a new algorithm for time series classification using time-frequency analysis and convolutional neural networks, while Vid presented a new vector space representation of movies and music albums using node embedding methods. Vid will further take part in a regional competition Region 8 (Europe, Africa and Asia without the Far East). Congratulations to both Vid and Domen!

Prof. dr. Marjan Mernik became the editor-in-chief

Prof. dr. Marjan Mernik became the editor-in-chief of the journal "Information Sciences". The journal has a current IF = 5,910 and is ranked in the first quarter for the field of “Computer Science, Information Systems”.

3rd place in the competition 'Competitions on Single Objective Bound Constrained Optimization'

In the 'Competitions on Single Objective Bound Constrained Optimization' competition at the international conferences CEC'2020, GECCO'2020 and SEMCCO '2020, two members reached the third place with the j2020 algorithm.

Žiga Leber received the Rector's Award

At the Rector's Day ceremony, on 27th of January 2020, Žiga Leber received the 2019 Rector's Award for the best academic achievement of students at the University of Maribor. Žiga graduated with the highest marks from the "Computer Science and Information Technology" Master's Degree Program at UM FERI and is currently enrolled in the "Computer Science and Informatics" Doctoral Program. His research focus is in the field of programming languages.

Prof. Aleš Holobar received the University of Maribor Award for Research, Art and Educational Work

At the Rector's Day ceremony, on 27th of January 2020, Prof. Aleš Holobar received the University of Maribor Award for scientific research, artistic and educational work. His research focus is in the field of digital signal processing, especially in the field of biomedical signal analysis. In the last five years, he has published 34 articles in JCR journals and three chapters in a monograph. He has been leading one EU and two national research projects. Through his scientific research and educational work, he contributed significantly to the overall development of the University of Maribor.

Assit. Prof. Matej Črepinšek received the Recognition of the University of Maribor for Research, Art and Educational Work

At the Rector's Day ceremony, on 27th of January 2020, Assit. Prof. Matej Črepinšek received the Recognition of the University of Maribor for Research, Art and Educational Work. Assit. Prof. Matej Črepinšek is active in the field of evolutionary computing and domain-specific languages. In period from 2014 to 2019, he co-authored 10 articles in JCR journals (A '' = 130.21, A '= 304.96, A1/2 = 328.91). His research work is highly cited with 1055 citations in the last ten years. Through his scientific research and educational work, Assit. Prof. Matej Črepinšek contributed significantly to the overall development of the University of Maribor.

Assit. Prof. Matej Črepinšek received the "Prometheus of Science for Excellence in Science Communication" award

Slovenian Science Foundation – SZF awarded Prof. Matej Črepinšek with the "Prometheus of Science for Excellence in Science Communication" award for year 2019, exposing his contributions to raising the awareness of young people about the importance of technical professions for the future of the society and the country. The award was presented at the ceremony, which was held in the Hall of the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia on January 28, 2020. Assit. Prof. Matej Črepinšek has been a member of the RINOS Expert Group since 2016. The RINOS Group is part of the National Education Institute Slovenia and aims to introduce the core contents of computer science into elementary and secondary school curricula. In 2018 they submitted a final report to the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, where they reviewed the teaching of computer science in over 12 countries and made a more detailed analysis of computer science teaching in four OECD countries. Doc. dr. Matej Črepinšek is further actively involved in the preparation of computer science competitions for elementary and secondary schools. In 2017 and 2019, he was the organizational leader of the ACM Bober State Competition at UM FERI.

Invited lecture of Assoc. Prof. P. N. Suganthan

On Monday, 27th of January 2020, prof. dr. Ponnuthurai Nagaratnam Suganthan of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, gave his invited talk "Randomization-Based Deep and Shallow Neural Networks" at UM FERI. Assoc. Prof. dr. Suganthan is the new Honorary Doctor of UM. He is one of the top researchers in the field of evolutionary computation and particle swarm algorithms. He is an IEEE Fellow and the recipient of several international awards and recognitions. With his scientific and research achievements he has made a significant contribution to the development of science on an international scale. For many years, he has collaborated with researchers of UM FERI and made significant contribution to the development of the University of Maribor.
